Dr. Keith Howard joined the NC State faculty in 2010 as a lecturer in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management. He earned his Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management in 2017 and joined the faculty in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management in 2019. This fall he will be teaching PRT 152 (Introduction to Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Event Management). This course provides foundational knowledge about the importance of recreation and parks to community health and individual wellness. Topics explored included time-management, the economic impact of parks and tourism, historical aspects of recreation, leisure motivation, and barriers to inclusion. PRT 152 is a springboard class for students with career interests in outdoor recreation, community sport, tourism, and event management although students from multiple academic fields take the class. Throughout the course, students will be given opportunities to interact with peers through problem-solving activities, interactive discussions, and individual projects. The diverse interests of students taking this class usually translates to unique classroom dynamics and results in a variety of viewpoints about the value and importance of recreation.
