Course Description for HI264-002Q: This course covers the history of Asia from 1800 to the Present. It focuses primarily on India, China, and Japan, whose histories we will compare in relation to the spread of Euro-American imperialism in the 19th century, the coming of mass politics, war and revolution in the first half of the 20th century, and the evolution of democracy, capitalism, and communism—in their distinctively Indian, Chinese and Japanese variants—in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.  We will use a variety of sources to explore some of the big events of this era, including the Meiji Restoration in Japan, the Partition of India, and the Cultural Revolution in China. We will conclude with some speculative discussion of what this history tells us about where Asia–and the world–is headed today.
